Urea freezing, will the winter version of vehicle urea work well?
Jan 17, 2023

The most abundant component of a compliant vehicle urea is pure ionised water, which also possesses the characteristics of ordinary water that freezes at low temperatures. However, as the available vehicle urea consists of multiple components, according to research data, it will freeze at -11° and in actual use will freeze completely at around -20°.
Can damage to a vehicle's urea system be caused when the vehicle urea freezes? According to relevant data, it is highly unlikely that damage to the vehicle will occur when the vehicle urea freezes.
This is because the urea system comes with its own heating unit as well as a temperature sensor. When the temperature sensor monitors that the vehicle urea solution is too cold or frozen, the urea tank heating unit will automatically heat it using the engine coolant.
This is why it is extremely necessary to warm up the vehicle before setting off in winter or in cold areas.
Do not overfill the urea solution and do not turn off the vehicle in a hurry when parking in cold areas, it is best to wait in place for 3 minutes and turn off the vehicle when the urea solution has completely flowed back into the urea tank, which can effectively prevent the pipeline from being frozen.
Long-distance truckers are used to having a few buckets of urea on board, which will inevitably freeze when running into colder areas.
There is not a particularly perfect solution. In everyday transport, some experienced drivers calculate the range of the vehicle urea and bring it into the cab in advance to defrost it when they are close to running out, either by refilling it in advance or by purchasing it temporarily when they run out.
It has also been said that some vehicle urea outlets will specialise in selling a winter version of vehicle urea, claiming that this urea will not freeze in non-extreme winter weather, so does this type of vehicle urea really work?
For this problem, the person in charge of the after-sales service station of the China National Heavy Duty Truck dealership in Beijing clearly said that there is no winter version or summer version of urea for commercial vehicles, and suggested that people should not believe or even buy this so-called winter version of urea. This is because chemical components such as anticoagulants are added to this type of urea solution in order to keep it from freezing, which can break the car urea solution content standards and make it less capable of cleaning nitrogen oxides.
