How to choose the material of tarpaulin?
Jan 19, 2023
Tarpaulins provide protection against wind and sun as well as rain and snow, thus protecting the goods on board. The choice of tarpaulin can vary according to the size of the cargo compartment and the scenario in which it is used, so let's talk about the materials and characteristics of tarpaulins.
The vast majority of drivers buy tarpaulins, the first consideration is the waterproof performance of the tarpaulin, you know, waterproof performance will directly affect the safety of goods, economic losses caused to card users. Therefore, most users buy tarpaulins, put the waterproof performance in the first place.
In addition to excellent rain protection, the sun and light protection of tarpaulins is also important. Especially in the hot summer months, fruit and vegetables can easily rot or dry out if they are not protected from the sun.
Usually when we fix the tarpaulin, we need to stretch it hard and tie it to the various tying hooks on the cargo compartment, the tarpaulin needs to withstand a lot of tension. The conditions on the transport road are extremely complex, and the tarpaulins are exposed to harsh weather and harsh working conditions for a long time, so their wear resistance, corrosion resistance and tear resistance must also be strong enough to withstand different weather and working conditions, and their service life will be relatively longer.
What are the different types of tarpaulins? What are the characteristics of each?
PVC tarpaulin: The most popular tarpaulin on the market at present is PVC tarpaulin, which is made from high strength polyester yarn. PVC tarpaulins are coated with polyvinyl chloride to form a waterproof layer to prevent rainwater penetration. This PVC tarpaulin is one of the most common tarpaulins on the market today because of its excellent abrasion resistance and water resistance.
Although the PVC tarpaulin is excellent in terms of water resistance and abrasion resistance, it is still relatively heavy in weight, and it can be very laborious to finish covering the tarpaulin when operated by one person, and is more suitable for models under 9m6 in length.
PE tarpaulin: If you want a certain level of water resistance but also want to take into account a good light weight, then PE tarpaulin is a good choice. PE tarpaulin is generally produced using coloured strips of cloth, made from high density polyethylene, which is coated with PE film on both sides of the PE woven fabric. Its most important feature is that it is very light and more affordable, and also has a basic waterproof effect.
However, the PE tarpaulin is relatively less resistant to wear and tear, and is prone to breakage after repeated use if it is often used in harsh and complex working conditions. However, it is light enough and cheap enough to be used on large trailers.
Film tarpaulin: Nowadays there are more truckers using film tarpaulins, which are characterised by being lighter and more durable and waterproof than ordinary tarpaulins. This type of tarpaulin has a layer of anti-abrasion coating inside, and the tarpaulin is designed as a whole sheet, which can directly cover the entire cargo compartment.
High strength PVC tarpaulin: This type of tarp is made of a chemically synthesised material and is made up of three parts. The top and bottom two parts are usually made of PVC and the middle layer is made up of a light-guiding fibre patch, which is compressed together in a specific way.
The tarpaulin is particularly resistant to wear and tear, is ductile and flexible, is not susceptible to corrosion, is water resistant and provides excellent cover for transport and goods.
The last one is coated with PVC, PTFE, flame retardant silicone and other refractory materials on the surface of the refractory fibres, together with a variety of chemical additives such as anti-mould agents, anti-aging agents, anti-static agents, etc., which are hot-laminated at high temperatures to make them fireproof, waterproof and anti-mould.
The refractory fibres make it fire resistant, the PVC, PTFE and silicone are water resistant and the chemical additives such as anti-mould and anti-aging agents give it an excellent anti-mould effect. It is the combination of a variety of materials and a special coating process that makes it waterproof, fireproof and mould resistant.
