When the vehicle's internal temperature or coolant temperature becomes too high, the engine will begin to malfunction. If not addressed promptly, this can lead to serious problems and even permanent damage to the vehicle. Therefore, to avoid this, it is essential to always maintain the appropriate coolant temperature, regardless of driving conditions.
In this article, we will explore the causes of overheating in vehicles. This way, you can address the problem at its root and avoid bigger problems later.
Generally, vehicle cooling methods fall into two categories: air cooling and water cooling. However, the vast majority of vehicles use a water-cooling design. Engine temperatures get very high when running, and the vehicle radiator's role is to ensure effective temperature regulation. This is why vehicle maintenance procedures include adding an appropriate amount of water and antifreeze/coolant mixture to the radiator.
Water-cooled vehicles are designed and manufactured to maintain a stable water temperature for optimal performance and extended service life. Therefore, when the water temperature rises, iron, aluminum, or steel components inside the engine can seize up. Eventually, these components may even melt, damaging other parts such as pistons, crankshafts, cylinders, connecting rods, and valves.
To ensure proper vehicle temperature regulation, you must include coolant/antifreeze checks in your routine vehicle maintenance. Remember, without coolant, the heat generated by continuous internal combustion will quickly damage the engine. Water alone is insufficient to keep the system cool; high temperatures will eventually cause the water to evaporate. Furthermore, in extremely cold weather, water can begin to freeze while the vehicle is idling. Therefore, it is recommended that you consult your vehicle's manual for the recommended mixing ratio of water and coolant/antifreeze.
It is essential to regularly check the coolant in the cooling system to ensure that all components show no signs of corrosion. While the main component of antifreeze, ethylene glycol, does not expire, the corrosion inhibitors it contains will eventually lose their effectiveness. Therefore, it is recommended to change the coolant every 30,000 miles.
Don't forget to maintain your vehicle's radiator regularly. Ensure it's functioning properly and free of rust buildup. Otherwise, the heat exchanger may malfunction and cause problems later on.
Typically, the radiator is located at the front of the vehicle, right in front of the engine. You'll see thick rubber cooling hoses connecting to the radiator, which lead directly into the engine. A temperature gauge or indicator light on the dashboard will tell you that the coolant temperature is too high and the engine is not cooling properly. You might even see white smoke and thick smoke coming from the engine compartment, accompanied by a burning smell.
If this happens while driving, be sure to pull over safely to the side of the road immediately. Remember to turn off the ignition switch and shut off the engine. At the same time, put the transmission in Park (P). Take a towel and open the hood to let the steam escape. After the engine and radiator have cooled down, slightly open the radiator cap to let out hot air and steam. Once the radiator has cooled down, you can pour in a mixture of water and antifreeze/coolant.
