What is a water tanker fire truck?

Sep 12, 2025

Water tank fire trucks can independently extinguish fires, draw water from a source for direct firefighting, or supply water to other fire trucks and fire-fighting spray systems. They can also be used as water supply and delivery vehicles in water-scarce areas, making them suitable for fighting general fires. In addition to firefighting pumps and equipment, these trucks are equipped with large-capacity water tanks, water guns, and water monitors.

According to the different types of water pumps in combat readiness, water tank fire trucks can be divided into ordinary water tank fire trucks, medium and low pressure pump water tank fire trucks, high and low pressure pump water tank fire trucks and high, medium and low pressure pump water tank fire trucks.

1. Standard water tank fire trucks

Use single-stage or two-stage centrifugal fire pumps, with a head of approximately 110-130 meters and a flow rate generally between 30-60 rpm.

2. Medium- and low-pressure pump water tank fire trucks

Composed of two series-connected centrifugal impellers, the low-pressure pump head is 1.0 MPa and the flow rate is 40 s. The medium-pressure pump head is 2.0 MPa and the flow rate is 20 s.

3. High- and Low-Pressure Pump Tank Fire Truck

This pump consists of a multi-stage centrifugal impeller connected in series. The first stage impeller is a low-pressure impeller, and the last three stages are high-pressure impellers. Low- and high-pressure impellers can be injected simultaneously. The high-pressure head can reach 4.0 MPa and a flow rate of 4000/min. The low-pressure head can reach 1.0 MPa and a flow rate of 4000/min.

4. High, Medium, and Low-Pressure Water Tank Fire Trucks

This newly developed high-performance product not only provides low-, medium-, and high-pressure jet firefighting, but also allows for combined low and high-pressure operation. At medium pressure, it can provide water over long distances, such as supplying water to high-rise buildings or working with aerial platforms to extinguish fires.

Based on the water capacity, water tank fire trucks can be categorized into small, medium, and heavy-duty types. Currently, heavy-duty water tank fire trucks have a water capacity of up to 20 tons, making them particularly suitable for use in water-scarce areas.

Generally speaking, a water supply fire truck can be divided into four functional areas.

The front section of the fire truck is the cab, where the driver and commander sit; behind the cab are the other firefighters' stations. Behind the first roller shutter on the vehicle body are various tools, including faucets and fire hoses. Behind these tools is the water tank for firefighting water. Near the rear of the fire truck is the pump compartment. As the name suggests, this is where the water pumps are housed. The pump compartment is typically covered with roller shutters on three sides, and the rear shutter can be retracted to reveal a display showing the pump's operating status. The pump compartment is also typically equipped with the necessary tools for operating the pumps.
