How does carbon deposits on the throttle valve damage the engine?

1. It can cause ignition problems, especially in cold mornings. It can take several tries to start, or even fail to start at all. This is because carbon deposits on the throttle valve partially block the passage, reducing the amount of air entering the cylinder and causing an incorrect air-fuel ratio, leading to ignition problems.

To start smoothly, simply press the accelerator slightly. This increases the air passage, allowing sufficient air to enter, allowing the engine to start naturally.

2. It can cause unstable idling, vibration, and even stalling. This is also due to insufficient air intake. Although the engine is starting, the throttle valve is constantly experiencing insufficient air intake when the engine is running normally. Insufficient air leads to incomplete combustion, insufficient power, and unstable idling, severe vibration, increased fuel consumption, and reduced comfort. The vibration can also be felt inside the vehicle. This can also be seen by observing the tachometer. If the tachometer keeps fluctuating, this is due to a dirty throttle valve.

3. Sluggish throttle response. Normally, when we want to speed up, pressing the accelerator will immediately increase the vehicle's speed, with a very fast response. However, when the throttle is dirty, the engine speed increase will be delayed when pressing the accelerator, and the vehicle will accelerate slowly. This can affect the driver's judgment and even cause danger when trying to overtake or accelerate suddenly.

4. Some vehicles may also experience a problem with braking comfort. When you press the brakes continuously, the vehicle may jerk forward and won't stop smoothly. This is actually caused by a dirty throttle valve and has nothing to do with the driver's driving style. In some vehicles, a dirty throttle valve can even illuminate the engine fault light, directly prompting the driver to clean it.

To determine if it's time to clean your engine, the most accurate method is to visit a 4S dealership for a computer test. This will measure the throttle opening. If it exceeds the standard value significantly, cleaning is necessary. If you don't test, you can also visually observe the four conditions listed above. If any of these conditions occur, and carbon deposits are clearly visible, cleaning is necessary.

Clean your engine promptly when it's time. Failure to do so will only worsen the carbon deposits. Incomplete combustion can lead to rapid accumulation of carbon deposits elsewhere, increasing fuel consumption. 

Throttle body carbon deposits are inevitable. Cleaning your vehicle after a certain mileage is necessary. 

If you drive short distances daily, frequently idle, and frequently drive on congested roads, carbon deposits will form more quickly. Carbon deposits can form not only on the throttle body but also in the intake manifold and cylinders. If you drive on smooth, non-congested roads with few traffic lights and a short distance, carbon deposits will form more slowly.
