Long-lasting mileage lubricants are the inevitable trend of the future

Oct 27, 2022

With the rapid development of truck technology, the gap in vehicle function and performance is becoming smaller and smaller, in order to highlight product advantages, more and more manufacturers are beginning to pay attention to after-sales service features, of which the importance of common vehicle consumables - lubricants is becoming more and more prominent, and many brand models are beginning to use long-lasting mileage lubricants.

Compared with ordinary lubricants, long mileage lubricants have longer oil change intervals, saving maintenance costs and improving vehicle operating efficiency for users, which is an inevitable trend for future development.

A. Types of lubricants and their functions

For mechanical products, lubricants can play a role in reducing friction, slowing down wear and cooling, etc. As long as they are mechanical products, they are bound to use lubricants.

The truck is a typical mechanical product, and the vehicle will use lubricants in many places, most notably the engine, transmission and rear axle. For engines, transmissions and rear axles, the role of lubricants is broadly similar, with the following main roles.

Lubrication function: Lubricates engine crankshaft connecting rod, transmission gear, rear axle gear and other friction parts. Reduce the wear of parts and improve the service life of parts.

Sealing role: Seal the gap between the engine, transmission and rear axle related parts to prevent dust and air from entering the interior of the parts and enhance the reliability of use.

Cooling role: mechanical movement will generate a large amount of heat, the lubricant acts as a heat transfer medium role, the heat will be brought back to the oil tank and then distributed to the air to prevent parts overheating damage.

Cleaning role: machinery in the process of movement due to friction will produce metal debris and other debris, lubricants can be cleaned to prevent parts wear.

Anti-corrosion and anti-rust role: lubricants can isolate the air and other debris, slow down the effective parts corrosion, rust and corrosion, to extend the service life.

Among them, engine lubricant is the most important oil in automotive lubricants, and engines are demanding higher and higher quality of lubricants due to emission upgrades.

Transmission lubricants and rear axle lubricants are also known as gear oils. Transmissions generally use GL-4 grade lubricants (medium duty gear oils) and rear axles generally use GL-5 grade lubricants (heavy duty gear oils), and rear axle lubricants have more stringent performance requirements for resistance to low-speed high torque, high-speed low torque and high-speed, shock loads. The two lubricants are not universal and are not interchangeable with engine lubricants.

2. The difference between long-lasting mileage lubricants

For mechanical products, lubricating oil is essential, and in order to guarantee the long-term effective role of lubricating oil, there are strict requirements for a number of properties such as anti-oxidation, anti-wear, anti-volatility, cleanliness and viscosity of lubricating oil.

To meet performance requirements, lubricants are generally composed of base oils and a variety of additives, most of which are refined from crude oil and determine the basic properties of lubricants, while additives make up for and improve deficiencies in the performance of base oils and give certain new properties.

Of course, in the actual use process, the lubricant will deteriorate with the use time and mileage (the oil becomes black and thick). The main causes of lubricant deterioration include air or other impurities mixed in the lubricant, metal chips entrapped in the lubricant due to wear and tear of parts, and oxidation under high temperature conditions, etc. When the lubricant deteriorates to a certain extent, it needs to be replaced.

Ordinary lubricant oil change mileage is relatively short, generally 20,000 kilometers, while the current market appearing long-lasting mileage lubricants, oil change mileage can reach 50,000 kilometers, 80,000 kilometers, 100,000 kilometers, 120,000 kilometers, or even 150,000 kilometers, oil change cycle, mileage significantly increased.

The principle of long-lasting mileage lubricants is actually very simple, which is to improve the performance of ordinary lubricants to the extreme, so as to extend the service life.

Compared with ordinary lubricants, long-life mileage lubricants have superb oxidation stability, extraordinary anti-wear performance, excellent lubrication performance and excellent shear stability by adding more excellent additives.

Long-life lubricants also keep the oil film attached to wear parts intact, enhancing the protection of parts at low temperatures and start-up, thus effectively extending the life of the lubricant.

However, to achieve long oil change results, the requirements for parts craftsmanship are also higher.

3. Development trend of long-lasting mileage lubricant

In the process of vehicle use, vehicle maintenance not only needs to spend a lot of money, but also needs to invest a lot of time costs, which is not conducive to reducing costs and increasing efficiency, so users are paying more and more attention to the cost of use when purchasing a car, and the demand for long warranty mileage lubricants is also growing.

To reduce usage costs and improve operational efficiency, lubricant companies will be the first to introduce ultra-long mileage solutions, and long mileage lubricants will be the core products developed in the future.
