How to replace the oil filter in a truck crankcase

Nov 14, 2025

Crankcase filters are crucial for preventing oil-contaminated air from flowing back into the engine. Many modern vehicles are designed to allow crankcase exhaust gases to return to the engine. Essentially, a crankcase filter traps oil residue from the vehicle's airflow through the engine.

It's important to note that replacing the crankcase filter is an essential part of a good truck maintenance routine. The task is fairly simple, but you'll need sufficient knowledge to choose the right product and correctly replace the old crankcase filter.

The price of crankcase oil filters varies greatly, depending on their materials, design, installation method, and other important factors. Anyone with even a basic understanding of truck maintenance knows that even the smallest maintenance procedures can have a significant impact over time.

How to replace the crankcase oil filter

Step 1: Locate the air filter housing, which will lead you to the crankcase air filter. It is typically located in the front right corner of the engine compartment.

Step 2: Begin loosening the fasteners securing the air filter housing cover. Remove the cover and wipe away any residue with a clean cloth.

Step 3: Now you can remove the air filter housing. However, before removing the housing, please remember the location of the air filter inside the housing.

Step 4: Take a few minutes to thoroughly clean the air filter housing. This ensures that oil or dust particles do not transfer to the new crankcase filter. You may also need to clean the inside of the housing to ensure no dust particles or debris remain.

Step 5: Locate the crankcase filter and remove its retaining clip. Typically, the crankcase filter is located inside the air filter housing. After removing the plastic housing and filter, you can remove the old crankcase filter. However, before installing the new crankcase filter, compare it to the old one to ensure they are identical.

Step 6: After installing the new crankcase filter, tighten the retaining clips. Then, reinstall the filter and plastic housing. Now, put the filter back in its original position, ensuring it is in the same position as when it was removed. Install the air filter housing cover and then tighten the nut.

As you can see, changing a vehicle's crankcase oil filter can be done by yourself. However, if you are not confident that you can do it successfully, it is best to seek help from an experienced mechanic.
