Tips for maintaining your transmission

Sep 02, 2024

Transmission is one of the three major components of a truck and a very important part of the whole powertrain system. Its role is to change the power output of the engine to the appropriate speed ratio and then distribute it to the truck's drive wheels, giving the vehicle the power to move forward. Its goodness or badness directly affects the driving comfort and maneuverability.

Also because it's so important, once it breaks down and needs to be repaired, neither the service station nor the garage will dare to try to disassemble it, but will just replace it with a new gearbox, which is a heartbreaking amount of money to pay for repairs.

Therefore, it is very important to pay attention to the maintenance of the gearbox to extend its service life. Today we will see how to maintain the transmission:

▎ Oil needs to be changed regularly

The oil in the transmission assumes the role of reducing wear, minimizing friction, and increasing output, and timely replacement will extend the service life of the transmission.

You can refer to the maintenance manual that came with your vehicle when you purchased it for the oil change time, as different manufacturers have different structural configurations, and the time will be differentiated.

It is important to use the original oil when changing the oil. Because the oil is viscous, mixing different types together will affect the performance of the transmission.

▎ Check more after a long run

After a certain number of kilometers or a long drive, check the transmission for oil leaks. Once you find oil leaks and seepage you need to repair the transmission in time.

This is because if the oil in the gearbox is lower than the normal range, it will not be able to splash the oil onto the surface of each gear through the gear rotor. At this time, because of the loss of oil film protection, gear high-speed rotation will generate a lot of heat, it is easy to wear the gear surface, and in serious cases, the gear surface will be ablated, resulting in gears can not rotate.

▎Clean ventilation holes frequently

During continuous operation of the vehicle, the oil in the transmission heats up as the heat increases. The heat rises, the pressure increases, and then it is discharged through the breather valve. If the vent valve is blocked at this point, the oil is oxidized at high temperatures and cannot reach its usual viscosity, the functional effect will be diminished.

Pay attention to the working condition of the ventilation valves regularly, and correct any abnormalities in a timely manner; clean frequently to keep the ventilation openings clean and tidy.

Many major failures are actually caused by small issues that occur regularly, so basic maintenance is very important. As long as you take care to maintain it properly and develop good habits, you can extend the lifespan of the transmission.
