How to avoid being rear-ended and rear-ending others?

Feb 26, 2024

Vehicle rear-end collisions are common traffic accidents. Some drivers may experience momentary lapses in concentration, leading to rear-end collisions, which can sometimes trigger chain-reaction collisions. So, how can we prevent chain-reaction rear-end accidents from happening?

▎Non-compliant parking

Driving at excessive speeds on highways, if the vehicle in front suddenly brakes or stops, can lead to rear-end accidents as drivers behind may not react in time.

▎Overtaking at will and illegally

Please do not overtake recklessly on highways! Especially, do not overtake on emergency lanes! Firstly, this is illegal behavior, and secondly, emergency lanes may have broken-down vehicles parked, and often there are tools, tires, and other debris, posing a significant risk.

▎Drivers are in poor mental or physical condition.

Fatigue driving and drunk driving typically result in delayed reactions, and accidents occurring under these circumstances are caused by the subjective condition of the driver, which is entirely controllable. For the sake of safety, drivers must not drive while fatigued or under the influence of alcohol.

▎ Overloading

When a vehicle is overloaded, the load weight increases, resulting in greater inertia and longer braking distance. If the overloading is severe, it can lead to accidents such as tire blowouts, sudden veering, brake failure, and overturning due to excessive tire loads and deformation. Additionally, overloading can also affect the vehicle's steering performance, increasing the risk of accidents due to loss of control during steering.

▎Change lanes at will

Some drivers make wrong turns at forked road junctions and hastily change direction, leading to rear-end collisions by vehicles behind them.

▎ How to prevent chain rear-end collisions

Keep a safe distance

One of the reasons for chain rear-end collisions is following too closely. If there is a sudden situation ahead, the driver has no time to react, especially in heavy traffic, making chain rear-end collisions likely to occur. Therefore, it is important to pay attention to the following distance of vehicles behind. If you notice a vehicle following too closely, you can gently brake to remind them or accelerate to increase the distance.

Drive within speed limits

Many chain rear-end collisions are related to vehicles speeding. When vehicles are speeding, it's difficult to stop in time if there's an emergency situation ahead. If the distance to the vehicle in front is too close or if the vehicle in front has already stopped, rear-end collisions are likely to occur.

Drive in the designated lane

Not following the designated lanes is also a significant factor leading to chain rear-end collisions.

When traffic volume is high, the gaps between vehicles are often filled by weaving vehicles due to road congestion. In such situations, if the leading vehicle encounters an emergency and brakes suddenly, the following vehicle may not have enough braking space, resulting in a rear-end collision and potentially triggering a multi-vehicle chain rear-end accident.

Try to avoid driving on the expressway in bad weather

When encountering rainy, snowy, or foggy weather conditions, it is best to avoid driving on highways as these conditions not only affect the driver's visibility but also make the road slippery, leading to longer braking distances. Many chain rear-end accidents occur in such adverse weather conditions.

Timely warning to rear vehicles to slow down

If you notice that the speed of the vehicles ahead is slowing down or if there are many parked vehicles, you should turn on your hazard lights to alert the vehicles behind to decelerate. This allows the vehicles behind more reaction time to avoid rear-end collisions caused by insufficient braking.

Pay attention to the vehicle in front

When following another vehicle, pay close attention to the front vehicle because it doesn't slow down or stop without reason. While driving in traffic, avoid aligning too closely with the vehicle ahead; instead, slightly offset your position to the left or right by an appropriate distance. This way, you can better observe the movements of vehicles ahead.

The vehicle behind can also see the condition of more vehicles in front.

It is necessary to promptly handle accidents on the highway, otherwise, if the vehicles behind have to brake suddenly or are unable to brake in time, it may cause a chain reaction of rear-end collisions.

Vehicles that can still move should be moved to the emergency lane and have their hazard lights turned on. Vehicles that are seriously damaged and cannot move should also have their hazard lights turned on and place a warning triangle behind the vehicle. People should evacuate to the outside of the isolation barrier and call for help.
