What exactly is the frame number?

Jun 19, 2023

Vehicle identification code, commonly known as frame number, is a set of character codes assigned by the manufacturer to a vehicle for identification purposes.

The identification code is composed of numbers and capital letters, including 10 digits from 0 to 9 and 23 letters excluding I, O, and Q, which can be easily confused with numbers. The first digit of the identification code represents the country of production; the second digit represents the manufacturer; and the third digit represents the type of vehicle, so combining these three digits can identify the vehicle. The fourth to eighth digits of the identification code represent the features of the vehicle; the ninth digit is the check digit; the tenth digit represents the year of production; the eleventh digit represents the assembly location, where 0 represents the original factory assembly; and the twelfth to seventeenth digits represent the production serial number.

Following ISO's requirements, the original identification code was gradually replaced by the standard Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) code. This code is still a unique identifier for the vehicle and corresponds to the internal system one-to-one. It will not have any impact on the use of the vehicle.

1. When a vehicle malfunctions or has an accident, the driver seeks help from a service station or CAC hotline center to accur⒔ately describe the starting point of the vehicle malfunction and distress, allowing you to clearly describe the situation you encounter in the simplest language and receive timely and accurate assistance.

2. Starting point of vehicle description for ordering vehicle parts, to avoid the possibility of errors caused by language description.

3. Used for taking photos on vehicles and archiving with extension numbers. The seemingly simple VIN code is actually the only ID card number of the vehicle in the world. Using this number well will bring you more convenience and avoid more trouble.
