Failure of the air conditioning temperature control switch

May 15, 2023

During the hot and sweltering summer, it can be very difficult for drivers to transport goods, so the performance of the vehicle's air conditioning system is crucial. A well-functioning air conditioning system can create a comfortable environment, help reduce fatigue and heat stroke, improve operational efficiency. Once the air conditioning system breaks down during a hot day, it can have a significant impact on our health, leading to heat exhaustion and other accidents. Therefore, keeping the air conditioning system in good condition is essential to ensure a safe and comfortable driving experience during the hot summer months.

Apart from refrigerant leaks which can cause the air conditioning system to malfunction, another common problem is evaporator icing. This problem is characterized by good cooling performance when the air conditioning is first turned on, but the performance gradually deteriorates as the system continues to run. Eventually, there is little or no cooling effect until the air conditioning is turned off for a period of time and then restarted. This problem often confuses drivers who do not understand the reason behind it. Why is it that the air conditioning can produce cool air but cannot maintain it?

Evaporator icing can also be caused by the malfunctioning expansion valve or a lack of refrigerant, but the most common cause is the failure of the temperature control switch. The temperature control switch is responsible for monitoring the temperature of the evaporator in the air conditioning system. Once the temperature becomes too low, the switch will stop the compressor from working and restart it when the temperature rises again. If the switch fails to function properly, the compressor may continue to run, resulting in excessive cooling and ice formation on the surface of the evaporator. This, in turn, can affect the airflow and cause the cooling effect to deteriorate steadily.

In the case of such a problem, the only emergency method available is to manually control the compressor switch, making the compressor run intermittently to prevent the evaporator from icing. However, manual control can be a hassle and can lead to lack of concentration, potentially causing accidents. Therefore, it is recommended to take the vehicle to a repair shop for repairs as soon as possible.
